Radisson Suites Bangkok is conveniently located on Sukhumvit Road in the Bangkok CBD, offering guests direct access to the city’s main business, entertainment and shopping districts. The hotel is a short walk to the Nana Bangkok Skytrain and Sukhumvit subway stations.

The design for the hotel was the result of a multi-faceted conceptual design rather than one large dominant concept. The client wanted the guests to experience different emotions throughout the various areas of the hotel, while making the best possible use out of an existing structure that included several columns and beams as well as low ceilings.

The HASSELL design was selected because it was able to achieve the various emotions and senses that the client sought for the hotel. The selection of materials reflects the culture of Thailand including stone, timber and silk and a rich and contrasting colour scheme of purple, orange and black, which alludes to the orient. The various moods of the hotel are easily observed as you walk throughout the Radisson Suites, from the bright, well-circulated and inviting guest rooms to the more masculine public areas. While there are differences between moods and feel throughout the hotel, HASSELL was able to create a subtle flow between areas in order to allow guests to make the transition without consciously noticing the design changes.

Sommet & Asociados created this modern residence in 2012 for a family located in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

The architects have cultivated a dramatic duality between substance and perceived weightlessness of the forms and materials.

“Urubó Hills is a picturesque landscape with native vegetation together with a wide and eclectic catalog of architecture. Such is the landscape that gives context to the Calderón House.

Under a simple reading the project involves two horizontal volumes: the lowest one visually set back and anchored in the landscape; and the top one, set as if it were floating in the air.

Material textures are essential components in the project. Stone and wood finishes are elements that beyond giving a reading between volumes, they provide this contemporary home with the sensibility of a traditional architecture environment.

The ground floor houses the public and common spaces: living and dining room, kitchen, study, bathrooms and a gallery that makes for an outdoor seating space that connects its sights with a green garden holding a swimming pool that connects the house with the barbecue place.

It is in this area that the service facilities are resolved without being perceived, consisting of a laundry area, a bedroom with bathroom and one bathroom for the pool area.

A floating staircase with wooden steps, located on the distribution hall of the ground floor, leads to a small family living room where natural light becomes the benchmark of vitality for the house. An interior garden bathes the wall with nuances of light and shadow providing added warmth to this space that serves as a link between the rooms of children and adults.”

Renovated Residence In Singapore With A Koi Pond Inside

This elegant and chic residence can be found in Singapore. It has been renovated in 2010 byRichardHO Architects and it features a modern and quite unexpected design. The prewar shop-house was beautifully transformed. It now features a retractable glass roof and an interior koi pond, both elements that make it stand out.

Initially, the residence was in quite good condition. However, it didn’t have the layout and design that the owners wanted to it had to be transformed in order to become more suitable for modern living. Several major changes had to be made. For example, the kitchen and the bathrooms were initially located at the back of the house and this wasn’t exactly a layout appropriate for entertaining. As a result, the house had to be reconfigured.

The architects managed to create a single volume that now contains the living room, dining area and the kitchen. This instantly gave the house a more modern look. But even though this is one huge space that goes all the way to the back of the house, you can still see that different spaces have different functions.

Other changes that are worth to be mentioned include the skylight and the air well. Of course, we can’t ignore the water feature. The residence now features a koi pond and the staircase goes up on its side. The retractable glass roof was also a major upgrade.

The second floor of the residence contains the master bedroom and an en-suite bathroom and the other level houses the nursery and another bedroom. So the private areas are upstairs while the rest of the space is for entertainment. The attic has been turned into a guest room and it’s also used as a study by the owners. There’s also a rooftop terrace with an infinity edge pool and beautiful views.

Future explorers take note. Applicants must be resilient, adaptable, resourceful and must work well within a team. The whole project will be televised, from the reality TV style selection process, to landing and beyond.

On a visit to the BBC’s London office, Mars One’s co-founder Bas Lansdorp explains why this would be a one-way flight.

During the seven-to-eight month journey, astronauts will lose bone and muscle mass. After spending time on Mars’ much weaker gravitational field, it would be almost impossible to readjust back to Earth’s much stronger gravity, says Landsorp.

Successful applicants will be trained physically and psychologically. The team will use existing technology for all aspects of the project. Energy will be generated from solar panels, water will be recycled and extracted from soil and the astronauts will grow their own food – they will also have an emergency ration and regular top-ups as new explorers join every two years.

But is it realistic to believe that individuals could live and prosper on the Red Planet?

Mars is in the firing line of the Sun’s high energy particles, called solar wind. The atmosphere of Mars is very thin as the solar wind is thought to have stripped much of it away.

On Earth, we are protected from the solar wind by a strong magnetic field. Without this, it would be much more difficult to survive. Although Mars once had similar protection about four billion years ago, today there is no such shield protecting it.

The Martian surface is therefore extremely hostile to life, says Dr Veronica Bray, from the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, who is sceptical about the project.

There’s no liquid water, the atmospheric pressure is “practically a vacuum”, radiation levels are higher and temperatures vary wildly, she says.

“Radiation exposure is a concern, especially during the trip. This can lead to increased cancer risk, a lowered immune system and possibly infertility.”

To minimise radiation, the project team will cover the domes with several metres of soil, which the colonists will have to dig up.

“I have no doubt that we could physically place a human being on Mars. Whether they’d be able to survive for an extended period of time is much more doubtful,” adds Dr Bray.

‘The single greatest achievement’

I’ll try to be in the first few to take the plunge.

My natural curiosity is what drives me. I am a scientist because I like to discover and know things. I am continually fascinated by the world around me. Travelling to Mars to continue that exploration seems like the next step.

I am motivated to apply because Mars One is asking for people who will not only be able to face the rigours of space but also the daily struggles of communal living. I believe I can face and conquer these challenges.

A one-way ticket does scare me but not enough to dissuade me. Successfully living on Mars will be the single greatest achievement of my life and so I am glad to put aside my concerns in the hope of something better.

“They [the applicants] will be told that there are risks, but it will be our responsibility to keep the risks within acceptable odds.”

Nasa astronaut Stan Love knows first-hand the difficulties with technology that his colleagues have experienced on the International Space Station in low-Earth orbit.

The apparatus which recycles human waste and turns “yesterday’s coffee into into tomorrow’s coffee needs frequent maintenance and would likely not survive years of continuous duty on Mars”, he says.

Love has recently returned from Antarctica which he says is a “picnic compared to Mars”.

“It’s full of water, you can go outside and breathe the air. It’s paradise compared to Mars and yet nobody has moved there permanently.”

Although dubious about the funding, the technology and the impact of radiation, Love applauds small enterprises like Mars One.

He strongly believes private organisations will help raise awareness and hopefully discover or design some technology which will help future teams reach their goal of landing on Mars.

“We’ve been dreaming about this for 50 years. The Moon was just supposed to be a stepping stone to Mars. But when you study the problem, you realise it’s immensely hard to do this.”

Dr Chris Lintott from Oxford University says that while the project is technologically plausible, he does not think they will find the funding.

“It’s about having the political will and the financial muscle to make this happen. That’s what nobody has been able to solve so far,” he explains.

But Lansdorp sees no issue with funding. He uses the revenue from the worldwide broadcasting rights of the Olympics as a comparison.

“This will be the biggest thing that humanity has ever done. In 15 years people will still be watching.

“Exploring our world, and now beyond is what humans do, it’s in our genome. The settlers’ dream of going to Mars will come true.”

Whether or not the mission will achieve its goal, the publicity generated from the “big-brother” style televised application process means the world will surely be watching.
